Korea Western Power will expand into the Central Asian renewable energy market in partnership with Saudi energy company ACWA, becoming the first South Korean state-run power generator to do so.
The company said on the 27th that it signed a memorandum of understanding with ACWA in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on the 25th to expand renewable energy projects.
The agreement is intended to jointly identify renewable energy business opportunities in Central Asia, centered on Uzbekistan, and to build a foundation for cooperation. The two companies will work together to jointly win renewable energy projects in Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan is aggressively expanding solar, wind and other power generation facilities to meet rising electricity demand driven by economic growth and industrialization. It is also increasing investment in flexibility resources such as battery energy storage systems (BESS) to secure grid stability as renewable capacity grows.
"Cooperation with ACWA will serve as a bridgehead for expanding our business into the Central Asian renewable energy market, following the Middle East," Korea Western Power CEO Lee Jung-bok said. The company has already won four power generation projects in the Middle East and is building and operating 3.5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity and 877 megawatts of combined-cycle gas capacity there.
