Polish State Assets Minister Wojciech Balczun visited South Korea to tour the energy and defense operations of HD Hyundai and Hanwha and open talks on building long-term partnerships.
A delegation led by Balczun visited Hanwha Aerospace's (012450) Changwon plant on the 25th, met with executives and inspected the K9 self-propelled howitzer production line, industry sources said on the 27th. At the meeting, he discussed the progress of Hanwha Aerospace's operations in Poland and plans for follow-on business, including a third executive contract.
The two sides also discussed producing the K9A2 self-propelled howitzer in Poland, according to sources. The K9A2 is the next-generation model of the K9, equipped with an automatic shell-loading system that sharply raises its rate of fire while cutting the number of crew required. Hanwha Aerospace signed a framework agreement with Poland in 2022 to supply 672 K9 howitzers and 288 Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers, and is currently carrying out a second executive contract. With localization of the Chunmoo and the K9 already under way, the talks are seen as an effort to extend the list of locally produced items to the next-generation K9A2.
Balczun also visited HD Hyundai Oilbank's Daesan plant the same day, where he reviewed refining and petrochemical facilities and energy solutions. He met with HD Hyundai Oilbank executives and raised the possibility of strategic cooperation between South Korea and Poland in energy and infrastructure, sources said. Polish state-run energy company PKN Orlen and others are pursuing large-scale capital spending to upgrade existing refining facilities.
Balczun had earlier met with Hyundai Engineering to discuss cooperation in petrochemicals, including the startup of a propylene and polypropylene plant under development in Police, Poland. Hyundai Engineering won and is carrying out the petrochemical plant project in Poland, which will have annual production capacity of 400,000 tons.
