After a retrial ruling ordered SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won to pay 944 billion won in property division to Roh Soh-yeong, director of the Art Center Nabi, foreign media outlets quickly reported the news and showed keen interest.
The U.S. broadcaster CNN reported on the 24th that "the ex-wife of a tech mogul has failed to secure a larger share of the AI boom in a decade-long 'divorce of the century' case," covering the outcome of the couple's divorce ruling that day. CNN said another twist had occurred in the case, which has drawn nationwide attention, and reported that the ruling ordering Chey to pay Roh 944 billion won in property division was less than the amount Roh had demanded. It also explained that when Chey publicly declared the divorce in 2015, SK hynix's share price was only about 33,000 won, but SK hynix has since grown into one of the world's most valuable companies.
Reuters delivered the outcome through a news alert immediately after the ruling was issued and commented that "the divorce case has drawn attention to the stake held by the billionaire who leads South Korea's second-largest conglomerate."
AFP also reported that SK Group's share price has surged more than threefold compared to 2015, when Chey announced the breakup through the media, noting that one of the issues in the case was whether the sharp rise in SK Group's value after the couple's separation should be reflected in the property division.
Bloomberg reported that "if this ruling is finalized, it will be the most expensive divorce case in South Korean history," and, citing the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, said Chey Tae-won's net worth amounts to about $5.6 billion (8.18 trillion won). Bloomberg said "the key issue in this ruling was how to assess the value of a spouse who contributed to building one of South Korea's largest companies." It also reported that Roh had initially demanded more than 40% of Chey's SK Group shares, a situation that could have made Chey's control of SK uncertain, but that Roh later changed her demand to a cash payment.
Reuters, citing fund managers and analysts, analyzed that while Chey may still need to sell or use SK Group affiliate shares as collateral to raise the division payment, it is not expected to affect the group's management control.
