The government is expanding egg imports to stabilize prices, prompting large discount stores to cut their retail prices. Attention is turning to whether egg prices, which have soared enough to earn the nickname "gold eggs," will finally enter a period of stabilization.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) held the third meeting of its summer task force on supply and demand stabilization for agricultural and livestock products at the Sejong Government Complex on the 13th. It announced that the price of imported fresh eggs (30-count) sold at E-Mart stores nationwide will be lowered from 5,890 won to 4,980 won starting on the 16th.
About 10 million imported fresh eggs, which the government is pushing to bring in additionally, will be supplied first to E-Mart, Lotte Mart, and the confectionery industry this week. The government then plans to expand the supply to about 20 million eggs per week.
In particular, Brazilian fresh eggs, having completed all domestic quarantine and food safety inspections, began full customs clearance on this day and are being distributed in the domestic market for the first time. The Brazilian eggs are extra-large (XL) grade, a size in high demand domestically, and are grade-A white eggs certified by Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) explained they are high-quality products weighing 61.42 grams or more per egg.
Expanded Discount Events... Agricultural Discount Vouchers Also Issued at 20 Billion Won Monthly Through November
Alongside expanding the egg supply, the government is running discount policies to lower prices as felt by consumers. MAFRA has been holding discount events on agricultural and livestock products at participating retailers from the 2nd through September 2. It will also issue "agricultural discount vouchers," which can be used to purchase domestic agricultural and livestock products, at a scale of 20 billion won each month from this month through November.
The vouchers can now be used at stores handling domestic agricultural and livestock products, expanded from the previous focus on traditional markets, improving convenience for consumers.
MAFRA also inspected crop growing conditions after the monsoon season and judged that there have been no major supply disruptions overall so far. However, considering the possibility of increased pest damage if hot and humid weather continues, the ministry plans to strengthen growth management, including support for nutrients and pesticides, focusing on damaged areas.

Livestock prices remain high, but supply conditions are improving for some items.
For pork, wholesale prices are declining as market shipments increase due to expanded shipping incentives, and this is expected to be reflected in retail prices after a time lag. Chicken retail prices have also recently fallen as supply increased, influenced by factors such as expanded imports of broiler hatching eggs.
"We will continuously secure new importing countries to establish a stable egg supply base and reduce the burden of consumer prices," said Lee Jae-wook, aT's director for supply and demand. "We will pursue import policies in a balanced manner while considering both the domestic poultry industry and supply-and-demand conditions."
"In summer, supply and demand conditions for agricultural and livestock products can change rapidly due to heavy rains and heat waves," said Kim Jong-gu, Vice Minister of MAFRA. "We will do our best to expand the fresh egg supply and provide discount support without disruption, to produce price stabilization effects that consumers can feel."
