Lam Research said Oct. 8 that it had shipped its 15,000th chamber for semiconductor manufacturing in South Korea, marking the result of 15 years of production at three facilities in Osan, Hwaseong, and Yongin in Gyeonggi Province.
​A chamber is an enclosed vacuum space inside semiconductor equipment where wafer-cleaning, deposition, and etching processes are performed. Lam Research manufactures and supplies deposition and etching equipment at its production facilities in South Korea.
​Lam Research procured more than 1 trillion won worth of products and services from South Korean suppliers last year. It currently has a supply-chain network of about 100 local companies, many of them small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Components and materials supplied by South Korean partners are shipped to Lam Research's manufacturing sites around the world.
​The company also conducts joint engineering projects to develop components with suppliers and runs quality-management programs. It is expanding its supplier network to various regions of South Korea and increasing cooperation with companies outside the greater Seoul area.
​Lam Research has also established a startup investment program. Lam Capital, the company's corporate venture investment arm, and Hana Ventures jointly established the Lam Research-Hana Semiconductor Unicorn Fund. It is Lam Research's first strategic semiconductor investment program organized at the national level. The fund will identify promising South Korean technology companies and support technology validation, commercialization, and expansion into overseas markets. Key areas of focus include manufacturing artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, advanced packaging, and new materials.
​The Lam Research Korea Technology Center, the company's local research and development (R&D) hub, recently established a Velocity Lab. The facility is designed to rapidly validate new materials and jointly develop technologies. Lam Research's Korea Technology Center is an advanced R&D facility designed to accelerate collaboration with customers and semiconductor process development.
​Tim Archer, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Lam Research, said, “For more than 40 years, Lam Research has continued to invest in South Korea, building on the competitiveness of its semiconductor ecosystem and its culture of collaboration. We will work more closely with our supply chain to deliver innovation with the speed and capabilities required in the AI era.”
