Hyundai Motor (005380) has finalized this year's wage agreement after nearly two months of strikes, completing wage negotiations at all five domestic automakers.
The union held a ratification vote on the tentative wage agreement, and 61.55% of those who cast ballots approved the deal, Hyundai Motor said on the 1st. The company and the union plan to hold a signing ceremony on the 2nd.
This year's tentative agreement includes a 100,000 won increase in monthly base pay, including seniority-based raises, a bonus of 400% of monthly wages plus 12.7 million won, 15 shares of company stock, 500,000 won in welfare points and a 200,000 won increase in holiday allowances, which takes effect in 2027. The union estimated the deal would lift pay by 40.84 million won per member this year.
Separately, the two sides agreed to hire 500 new production workers from the second half of next year through 2028, to extend the retirement age without expanding the wage peak system if the law is revised, and to withdraw all damage claims and provisional seizures the company had filed against the union.
Hyundai Motor and the union began talks on May 6 and held 16 rounds of negotiations without reaching agreement. The union launched partial strikes on July 13 and escalated to a full walkout last month, its first in 10 years, deepening the conflict.
Union strikes totaled 60 hours this year, while production lines were idled for 120 hours, twice as long. Industry estimates put Hyundai Motor's losses from the strikes, which began in July, at about 55,200 vehicles in lost output and 2.35 trillion won in revenue.
The two sides reached a tentative agreement on the 25th of last month, and the union vote on the 31st brought this year's wage and collective bargaining talks to a close. Among domestic automakers, Kia (000270) held its wage agreement signing ceremony on the 31st of last month. Renault Korea approved its tentative wage agreement on the 26th of last month, while GM Korea and KG Mobility (003620) concluded their talks in July.
With the wage deal settled, Hyundai Motor is expected to accelerate efforts to expand its market presence in the second half. The company's operating profit fell 25.8% in the first half of this year from a year earlier, leaving it under pressure to improve earnings.
