Kakao Games (293490.KQ) reported a second-quarter operating loss of 23 billion won on a consolidated basis, widening its deficit from a year earlier.
Kakao Games said in a regulatory filing on the 5th that its second-quarter consolidated revenue was approximately 75 billion won, down 35% from 115.8 billion won a year earlier. The operating loss of 23 billion won widened 167% from the 8.6 billion won operating loss recorded in the same period last year. However, compared with the previous quarter's operating loss of 25.4 billion won, the deficit narrowed by 10%.
By business segment, PC online game revenue rose approximately 51% year-on-year and fell about 20% quarter-on-quarter to approximately 22.3 billion won. Mobile game revenue came in at 52.7 billion won, down about 48% year-on-year and about 4% quarter-on-quarter.
The company explained that the results were affected by factors including a stabilizing decline in revenue from existing live titles and a gap in new releases.
Kakao Games said it will carry out an overall business overhaul under a new management system in the third quarter to strengthen the foundation for future sustainable growth. The company plans to closely review its game projects while concentrating its capabilities on the launch of core intellectual property (IP).
First, the company will begin pre-registration for the K-fantasy mobile massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) "World of Goblins" within this month and accelerate final development to present it to users in October. It also plans to release the strategy adventure role-playing game (RPG) "Dungeon Arise" and the open-world zombie survival simulator "God Save Birmingham" within this year and early next year, respectively, and will make every effort to unveil the highly anticipated MMORPG "ODIN Q: Valkyries' Call" early next year. In addition, the company plans to continue expanding its game portfolio by utilizing popular comic and webtoon IP in game development and services through collaboration with The Grim Entertainment.
Meanwhile, Kakao Games is also working to enhance shareholder value, starting with the cancellation of 500,000 treasury shares. The company has established and is implementing medium- to long-term shareholder return measures, including the introduction of a restricted stock unit (RSU) performance-based compensation system for executives and employees, the transfer of capital reserves to retained earnings to secure funds for shareholder returns, and treasury share purchases by management.
"Going forward, we will focus on presenting games with a high likelihood of success in the global market and build up our internal strength for sustainable growth," Kakao Games CEO Lee Si-woo said. "We will sequentially unveil new titles reorganized around market competitiveness, and continue transparent market communication with users and shareholders."
