HD Hyundai will unveil next-generation liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and eco-friendly vessel technologies.
HD Hyundai said on Sept. 13 that it will participate in Gastech 2026, scheduled for Sept. 14-17 in Bangkok, Thailand. Five affiliates — HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, HD Hyundai Marine Solution and HD Hyundai Electric — will take part.
HD Hyundai is set to receive design approval from Lloyd's Register (LR) for a next-generation LNG carrier featuring forward accommodation and wind-assisted propulsion systems. The vessel is designed with crew accommodation at the bow, freeing up space on the upper deck to install multiple wind-assisted propulsion systems.
A 35,000-cubic-meter liquefied carbon dioxide carrier and a 185,000-cubic-meter hybrid electric propulsion system are also set to receive Approval in Principle (AiP) from classification societies. An artificial intelligence (AI) solution designed to support optimal operation of LNG carrier engines will receive AiP and Product Design Assessment (PDA).
HD Hyundai will also jointly develop digital twin technology with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Siemens to assess the safety of ammonia-fueled vessels.
"We will continue developing vessel technologies that can improve operational efficiency while responding to environmental regulations," an HD Hyundai official said.
