Ottogi (007310) said on Sept. 14 that it held a memorial ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Honorary Chairman Ham Tai-ho, the company's founder.
The ceremony took place on Sept. 11 at Ham Tai-ho Hall in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, and was attended by Ottogi Chairman Ham Young-joon, President Hwang Sung-man and other executives and employees. The event was arranged to look back on the life and legacy of Ham, who founded Ottogi and helped drive the growth of South Korea's food industry. It also served as an occasion to revisit his management philosophy, which centered on putting quality first, a sense of duty to improve dietary life, and a spirit of giving.
Born in 1930 in Wonsan, Hamgyongnam-do, Ham established Poongrim Trading, Ottogi's predecessor, in 1969. Starting with Ottogi Curry, the company went on to launch a series of food products including soups, ketchup, mayonnaise and vinegar, and led changes in the country's food culture with instant products such as Ottogi 3-Minute Curry.
Ham placed quality above all else. He also acted on the principle of "sikpyeongboguk" — contributing to the nation's development by raising the quality of food — along with a belief that companies should contribute to the country. Under that approach, Ottogi established a tradition of flying the national flag at its factories nationwide and singing all four verses of the national anthem at monthly in-house assemblies and major events.
Ham also paid particular attention to corporate social responsibility. In 1992, he began supporting children with congenital heart disease through the Korea Heart Foundation, and in 1996 he laid the groundwork for the Ottogi Ham Tai-ho Foundation, expanding his giving into scholarships and support for academic research. The heart disease support program, which began by helping five children a month, has continued for more than 30 years, and as of August this year a cumulative total of 6,783 children had received assistance.
The values and management philosophy the founder emphasized continue to shape how Ottogi operates today. Under its corporate philosophy of "contributing to the improvement of humanity's dietary life and health," the company is working to strengthen product competitiveness in areas such as taste and quality while steadily carrying out social contribution activities. This year, it opened Ham Tai-ho Hall at its Anyang plant, a heritage space where visitors can explore the founder's life and management philosophy, Ottogi's growth and changes in South Korea's food culture. The aim is to record the founder's philosophy and pass it on to the next generation.
"Carrying forward and developing founder Ham Tai-ho's founding spirit and management philosophy, so that Ottogi continues as a sustainable company no matter who leads it, is an important task," Chairman Ham Young-joon said. "We will carry on the meaning of 'Poongrim' that the founder dreamed of, contribute to improving humanity's dietary life, and work harder to move forward rather than rest on the past."
