The government of Grenada on Monday canceled its production-sharing contract with Global Petroleum Group, a Russian-backed outfit that in 2017 announced it had made a natural gas discovery offshore the Caribbean island.
In a Facebook post, the island's Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell accused the company of failing to meet the terms of the contract after holding the acreage for 18 years.
"Following a thorough review of the Global Petroleum Group’s failure to meet its obligations, the government of Grenada has lawfully terminated its agreements with the company," the prime minister wrote.
GPG had announced a discovery in 2017 at its Nutmeg 2 well, but the discovery was never appraised to determine the amount of gas discovered or if commercial production was viable.
GPG drilled the well near the Trinidad and Venezuela borders and the well sits close to where Shell (SHEL.L) operates its North Coast Marine Area.
Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada have a memorandum of understanding to export natural gas from Grenada to be processed by Trinidad's Atlantic LNG and petrochemical plants.
GPG was not immediately available for comment.
