KakaoPay Securities is expanding into a "national investment platform" by combining the Kakao ecosystem, artificial intelligence (AI), and U.S. financial networks. After linking stock trading services with Kakao Bank in August, the company plans to unveil personalized AI investment agents by year-end and introduce a Korean stock brokerage service in the United States in the first half of next year.
Shin Ho-chul, CEO of KakaoPay Securities, announced the mid- to long-term strategy at a press conference on the 23rd, saying, "I want to create an era in which 20 million people invest within three years." Currently, there are about 14 million domestic stock investors, and KakaoPay Securities, which has secured more than 8.5 million stock accounts, is seeing 100,000 to 200,000 new accounts flow in each month. Accordingly, the company plans to focus on cultivating customers with little investment experience into new investors, rather than bringing over investors from existing brokerages.
The key is "one AI investment agent per person." It analyzes an investor's assets, disposition, and life cycle to provide personalized information ranging from financial education to stock analysis. The company plans to use verified data, ontologies, and knowledge graphs to reduce hallucinations in generative AI and to explain the basis for its judgments. It is also considering connecting the agent to external services such as KakaoTalk and Telegram. KakaoPay Securities has placed a research team within its AI service center, focusing on information curation and the development of corporate analysis tools rather than producing reports.
The company is also broadening points of contact with investors. Starting in August, it is preparing to allow KakaoPay Securities stock trading services to be used through Kakao Bank as well. Fractional trading of domestic stocks will also be introduced next month. After providing stocks worth up to 100,000 won to couples who marry this year, the company will gift stocks worth 100,000 won to newborns starting from those born in 2027. CEO Shin projected that "the related budget will reach about 20 billion won." Along with this, the strategy is to naturally convert KakaoPay and Kakao Bank users into investors, using low customer acquisition costs as a growth driver.
Overseas, the company is building a "global gateway for K-stocks" with U.S. brokerage Siebert Financial. It aims for a local launch in the first half of next year by combining KakaoPay Securities' investment content and community functions with a business-to-business (B2B) framework that enables U.S. brokers to broker Korean stocks. Siebert Financial is also reviewing tokenization to enable 24-hour trading within the U.S. regulatory framework. This takes into account trading convenience arising from the time difference between Korea and the United States, and the company said it will proceed with discussions premised on legal reviews at home and abroad, the direction of regulatory authorities, and principles of investor protection.
The company is also beginning business diversification using its investment trading license. It plans to focus on initial public offering (IPO) underwriting over the next 6 to 12 months, and to review exchange-traded fund (ETF) liquidity provider (LP) operations over the mid to long term. It plans to place weight on venture capital investment by utilizing the startup networks of Kakao Ventures and Kakao Investment.
Shin Ho-chul, CEO of KakaoPay Securities, said, "Two out of three Koreans are outside the capital market, and the reason they do not invest is not because they lack money but because it is difficult and frightening." He added, "Our goal is not to sell many accounts, but to create an era in which more citizens can invest properly and grow their assets."
