Korea Aerospace Industries (047810), or KAI, said on the 20th that it signed a joint agreement with Airbus Helicopters (AH) to continue discussions on future cooperation, at a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the two companies' partnership held on the 17th at AH's headquarters in Marignane, France.
The event was attended by executives including KAI Chief Executive Officer Kim Jong-chul and AH Chief Executive Officer Mathieu Louvot.
The two companies have built a cooperative relationship in the rotorcraft sector over 20 years, since they began technical cooperation on developing the Korean utility helicopter "Surion" in 2006. They carried out the development of the Surion and the domestically produced light armed helicopter (LAH) "Miron" as planned, and expanded into military and government variants for firefighting, police, and medical evacuation. The Marine Attack Helicopter (MAH), currently under joint development, is also approaching its final stage.
Through this agreement, the two companies shared their cooperation achievements so far. They also sought to strengthen their ongoing cooperation in the rotorcraft business, centered on two pillars: supply chain stabilization and future business cooperation. They established a comprehensive cooperation framework, including the development of next-generation future technologies to address the civilian and defense rotorcraft markets.
First, to stabilize the supply chain, the two companies plan to optimize the technical support services and parts supply systems required for operating the Surion and Miron. The plan is to secure high aircraft availability and maintenance stability by expanding parts supply capabilities.
In addition, they plan to cooperate in the field of next-generation rotorcraft technology to respond to the requirements of future battlefields and the evolving aerial mobility ecosystem. Based on this, they will also explore new cooperation opportunities such as unmanned aerial systems and manned-unmanned teaming technologies.
"Over the past 20 years, AH has been KAI's best strategic partner in the rotorcraft sector, successfully carrying out long-term projects such as the Surion and Miron together," Kim said. "We look forward to exploring together the development potential of AI-based manned-unmanned teaming technology going forward."
