3.Outline
(1) Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting
METI and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) co-hosted the Eighth Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting. During the meeting, the Hydrogen Council, a global hydrogen alliance, delivered a presentation on Global Hydrogen Compass 2026. Also, Mr. SATO Koji, Vice Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, gave a presentation on measures to promote public-private partnerships and create a hydrogen-based society. Toyota Motor is a member of the Hydrogen Council. In addition, relevant countries and organizations shared updates on their hydrogen policies and explored possibilities for policy collaboration and international cooperation with a focus on the significance of hydrogen and ammonia for energy security and trends in the creation of international demand for them.
The Chair’s Summary was issued in light of these discussions to emphasize the significance of hydrogen and ammonia for energy security and for the resilience of industrial supply chains, as well as the importance of creating demand through public-private collaboration and fostering market formation through international cooperation.
Also, at the meeting, hydrogen-roasted coffee was served to offer participants a firsthand experience of a “tasty” hydrogen-based society.
(2) Global High-Level Symposium on Hydrogen and Ammonia
This symposium was held for the public and private sectors to share practical insights to gain momentum toward a hydrogen-powered society. Participants discussed how to foster collaboration among consumer countries and companies to build international hydrogen supply chains as well as how to create demand for hydrogen and build a supply network for it at the regional level within their respective countries. They also discussed the challenges that need to be addressed to expand the supply and demand of ammonia for power generation, marine transportation and industries, as well as key issues involved in transitioning from demonstration projects to commercial deployment.
(3) Memoranda of cooperation among governments and companies
- The Government of Japan and the Government of the Republic of Slovenia concluded a memorandum of cooperation for hydrogen and its derivatives to establish robust supply chains, promote technological development and share related information for low-carbon hydrogen and other fuels.
- In the presence of Mr. AKAZAWA Ryosei, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, three major Japanese and Slovenian companies—Yokogawa Electric Corporation, ELES (the state-owned electricity transmission and distribution system operator of Slovenia) and Plinovodi (Slovenia’s gas transmission system operator)—signed a memorandum of cooperation for the development of a hydrogen ecosystem across Slovenia. The goal of this memorandum is to foster inter-industry collaboration for the power, gas and hydrogen infrastructure in Slovenia to enhance national energy security and stabilize energy supply while expanding the use of renewable energy in the country.
(4) Meetings with various countries
- Minister Akazawa held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Jernej Vrtovec, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of Slovenia. They exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in the hydrogen sector.
- Mr. KOMORI Takuro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, also held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Nomalungelo Gina, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of South Africa. They exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in the hydrogen sector.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister Komori held informal talks with H.E. Mr. Admir Sahmanovic, Minister of Energy and Mining of Montenegro. They exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in the hydrogen sector.
(5) Visit to H2 & FC EXPO
After the end of the Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting, which was held in collaboration with H2 & FC EXPO, one of the world’s largest international hydrogen and fuel cell expositions, participants in the Meeting visited the venue to see exhibits of leading companies in the fields of hydrogen and ammonia production and utilization and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), which are essential for the establishment of hydrogen and ammonia supply chains. Seeing the exhibits helped the participants deepen their understanding of how Japanese companies are implementing initiatives for the practical use of hydrogen and ammonia in society.
