TOKYO --The Japanese government has announced 213.1 billion yen ($1.37 billion) in aid over a decade to Imabari Shipbuilding and others in a first round of support for capital spending in the shipbuilding industry.
Imabari, the nation's top shipbuilder, and group company Tadotsu Shipyard will receive a total of 113.8 billion yen in subsidies. Second-largest shipbuilder Japan Marine United will get 49.4 billion yen, while Namura Shipbuilding and subsidiary Hakodate Dock will receive a total of 49.9 billion yen.
Public-private investment is expected to total roughly 600 billion yen, said Yasushi Kaneko, minister of land, infrastructure, transport and tourism, in a news conference after a cabinet meeting Friday.
Imabari's plans include the construction of hull block and painting facilities at its Marugame headquarters in Kagawa prefecture and its Saijo shipyard in Ehime prefecture. The company will add high-capacity jib cranes and increase steel-processing capacity, while also working toward automation by deploying robots.
The government aims to double domestic shipbuilding capacity from 2024 levels by 2035 through an industry revitalization fund set up in fiscal 2025 to provide around 350 billion yen in support over 10 years.
