South Korea's exports came close to $100 billion in August, a notable showing given that summer vacations typically depress manufacturing operating rates. Semiconductor exports alone reached $46.7 billion, up 209% from a year earlier.
Exports totaled $98.25 billion in August, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said on the 1st. After exports topped $100 billion for the first time ever in June, the country held near that level in July ($99 billion) and again in August. Average daily exports, adjusted for working days, came to $4.47 billion, staying above $4 billion for a fourth consecutive month.
Cumulative exports for January through August already stand at $693.4 billion, just $15.9 billion short of last year's full-year total of $709.3 billion. If August's daily average holds through September, cumulative exports could surpass the year-earlier level within this week.
Semiconductors were again the driving force. Chip exports reached $46.7 billion in August, accounting for 47.5% of total exports, the ministry said. That is the highest monthly figure on record for semiconductor exports. A ministry official attributed the strength to sustained demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure as hyperscalers such as Google and Amazon expand capital spending.
Fourteen of the country's 20 major export categories, including semiconductors, posted gains. Computer exports, which tend to track semiconductor trends, rose 419% from a year earlier to $6.2 billion. Wireless communication devices (21%), secondary batteries (24%), general machinery (2%) and electronic devices (16%) also improved. Petroleum products (65%) and petrochemicals (12%) held up on high oil prices stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. Steel, which had struggled with a flood of Chinese supply, saw exports rise 8% on demand tied to AI data center construction.
Autos were the exception. Exports fell about 30% from a year earlier to $3.9 billion as summer vacations coincided with strikes. Auto parts exports slid 10% to $1.5 billion. Ship exports came to $1.7 billion, down 46%, because few vessels were delivered during the month. Shipbuilding is prone to wide monthly swings because individual export contracts are large and revenue depends on delivery timing.
Imports rose 22.5% from a year earlier to $63.51 billion in August. The trade surplus for the month was $34.75 billion, bringing the cumulative surplus to $202.5 billion.
