Fortinet, a global network security company, will hold a forum on operational technology (OT) security for security professionals at hospitals nationwide.
Fortinet and the Korea Hospital Information Security Association will jointly host the “Hospital OT Security and AI Threat Response Forum” on September 16 at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry. OT security refers to the technology environment used to monitor and control industrial facilities and operational processes.
According to the Korea Social Security Information Service, cyberattacks targeting domestic medical institutions increased nearly fourfold, from 18 incidents in 2020 to 71 in 2024. In 2024, about 57,623 intrusion attempts targeting tertiary general hospitals were recorded.
Cyberattacks on medical institutions pose a heightened risk because they can not only expose patients’ personal information but also disrupt emergency medical services.
At the forum, Fortinet will introduce approaches for building hospital OT security architectures, as well as strategies for controlling and governing shadow AI and responding to intelligent ransomware attacks using AI. The company will also demonstrate solutions that allow participants to see real-world cyberthreat response scenarios.
The Korea Hospital Information Security Association and the Korea Social Security Information Service will deliver opening remarks and keynote speeches, respectively. Law firms Yulchon and Kim & Chang will participate in sessions on policy and legal issues. Discussions will cover responses to the AI Basic Act and legal risks arising from cybersecurity incidents at hospitals.
“Threat patterns are becoming increasingly complex as AI technology spreads,” said Moon Gwi, executive vice president at Fortinet Korea. “Because security in health-care environments is directly linked to patients’ lives, protecting OT infrastructure is becoming even more important.”
“Security incidents at medical institutions are not simply a matter of data leakage but can threaten patient safety,” said Kim Jin-eung, chairman of the Korea Hospital Information Security Association. “We hope this forum will serve as a practical platform for discussions encompassing technology, policy and law.”
