TOKYO -- Japanese financial group SBI Holdings is set to spend $270 million to take a 20% stake in Ajaib Group, a major Indonesian online brokerage, as early as this month, making the Southeast Asian company an equity-method affiliate.
In addition to online brokerage services, Ajaib's operations include foreign-exchange margin trading, crypto currencies and asset management. SBI plans to collaborate with the Indonesian company to promote circulation of JPYSC, the yen-denominated stablecoin developed by the SBI group, and expand its cryptocurrency business overseas.
In July, SBI acquired Coinhako Group, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange operator, for about 16 billion yen ($100 million). It has also invested in DigiFT, a Singaporean company that operates a digital securities trading platform, and they together established a joint venture.
By partnering with and investing in companies across Southeast Asia, SBI aims to promote cross-border settlement and trading of digital securities using blockchain technology.
