U.S. equity futures rose on Tuesday after the S&P 500 posted a losing session as investors turned cautious ahead of Nvidia's earnings and a key inflation report due later this week.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 199 points, or 0.4%. S&P 500 futures added 0.4%, while Nasdaq 100 futures were 0.8% higher.
On Monday, the S&P 500 fell 0.28%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.76% as declines in chip stocks and other tech names weighed on the broader market. Meanwhile, the Dow gained 140.15 points, or 0.26%.
U.S. bond yields continued their decline Tuesday after CNBC reported that the Treasury Department could use its $1 trillion General Account to fund its plans to ramp up government bond purchases. The U.S. 10-year Treasury was last down more than 3 basis points at 4.666%.
Investors were taking some risk off the table as they continued to digest last week's pullback and brace for Nvidia earnings this week. The chip giant's quarterly report is due on Wednesday after the closing bell.
Inflation is also top of mind for traders, with the personal consumption expenditure price index reading for July out on Wednesday.
Another catalyst for stocks and the bond market looms on Friday, with Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh expected to deliver a speech at the Fed's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His speaking engagement comes after the Treasury Department announced a plan to tame long-dated Treasury yields.
"For investors, the essential question now is how, if at all, to respond to the rise in yields," UBS strategists said in a note on Tuesday morning. "Our base case remains that yields should decline as inflation moderates. Such a benign macroeconomic outcome should support a continued broadening of the equity rally."
UBS advised traders to "stay invested as the equity rally broadens."
"While higher yields are typically a headwind for equities, we believe strong corporate earnings and expectations of further growth should continue to support global equities broadly," the bank said. "We now expect S&P 500 earnings per share to grow 25% this year and another 14% next year. In Europe, we see 15% growth in both 2026 and 2027, while we estimate Asia ex-Japan should enjoy earnings growth of 72% this year."
In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 closed 0.5% higher, while South Korea's Kospi rose 0.68%. Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 added 0.68%. Mainland China's CSI 300 closed 0.24% lower.
European stocks also moved broadly higher on Tuesday, with the regional Stoxx 600 last seen up by 0.3%.
