TOKYO -- Japanese trading house Itochu has turned majority-owned unit We Sell Cellular (WSC), a U.S. distributor of used mobile phones, into a wholly owned subsidiary to tap into the growing demand for inexpensive devices as prices soar.
Itochu announced the purchase Friday, spending about $13.4 million to raise its stake to 100% from 79.5%. WSC is a midsize business based in the state of New York that buys used smartphones and sells them to retailers and wholesalers across the country.
By making WSC wholly owned, Itochu expects to speed up decision-making and strengthen its presence in the fast-growing American market. The company also plans to expand WSC's business by handling a wider range of products, including tablets and personal computers, and by growing such services as information technology equipment maintenance.
Itochu bought the 79.5% stake in April 2025 with an investment of about $47 million.
The trading house is active in the secondhand smartphone business in Japan through Belong, a Tokyo-based company it established in 2019. Itochu has also entered the electronics-recycling business through a partnership with a major U.S. IT recycler.
