SKC (011790) said its board approved a cash injection of about 281 billion won ($200 million) into Absolics, its semiconductor glass substrate investment arm, through a rights offering allocated to existing shareholders. The company disclosed the decision after the board met on the 4th.
SKC will acquire 192,416 new shares allotted in line with its 70.05% stake in the affiliate.
The move follows a 1.1671 trillion won rights offering SKC completed in the first half of this year. The company had said it would channel about 590 billion won of the proceeds into glass substrates, a next-generation semiconductor packaging material, over the following three years. The Absolics investment marks the first disbursement under that plan.
The remaining funds will be deployed in stages as the business progresses, SKC said.
Absolics is preparing to commercialize both embedded and non-embedded glass substrate products.
SKC holds 70.05% of Absolics, with U.S. chip equipment maker Applied Materials owning the remaining 29.95%.
