SK Chemicals (285130.KS) is seeking partners to build a circular economy for waste banners.
SK Chemicals said on the 24th that it will participate in the "2026 Regional Extinction Idea Solverthon" led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, publicly soliciting ideas to build a nationwide supply chain connecting waste banner collection and aggregation through to resource conversion. The application period runs through August 3.
The Regional Extinction Idea Solverthon is a program in which the government, businesses, and local communities collaborate to identify solutions to regional problems and support their commercialization.
This competition was arranged to derive collaborative solutions needed to build a circular economy system based on waste banners generated in local communities, and to identify partners. A wide range of participants can take part, including existing banner-related businesses and recycling businesses, as well as social and solidarity economy organizations, startups, and institutions and groups. Participants can propose various ideas for building the supply chain, such as establishing waste banner collection systems, operating regional hubs, developing pre-processing business models, and community-linked projects.
Outstanding ideas will receive the Korea Chamber of Commerce Chairman's Award and a prize of 1 million won. SK Chemicals said that, regardless of whether proposals win, it will carefully review all submitted proposals and, for those with business viability and feasibility, will seek business cooperation in the future process of waste banner collection and supply chain construction.
Through this competition, SK Chemicals will secure a nationwide supply chain connecting the entire process from waste banner collection and aggregation to pre-processing and resource conversion. The company plans to establish infrastructure for stable recovery and resource conversion of waste banners that reflects the characteristics of each region, with the participation of regional small and medium-sized enterprises and social and solidarity economy organizations.
Through this, the company is pursuing the establishment of a resource circulation system in which waste banners are used as raw material to produce SKYPET CR, a recycled PET material, through a chemical recycling process, which is then used again to make banners.
Building a waste banner supply chain is considered an essential task for expanding waste banner resource circulation. According to the Ministry of Environment, approximately 6,000 tons of waste banners are generated in Korea each year, of which about 70% are landfilled or incinerated. Although waste banners are made of PET material, most are not converted into resources due to a lack of systems for collection, pre-processing, and utilization.
"Building a circular economy model that uses waste banners as waste banners again is a business that cannot be completed with the technology and solutions of a single company alone," said Ahn Jae-hyun, president of SK Chemicals. "We will work in close solidarity with various stakeholders to build a resource circulation system that reflects the characteristics of each local community."
