Samsung Heavy Industries (010140.KS) has launched wide-ranging cooperation with the US shipbuilding industry, drawing on its advanced vessel construction technology and shipyard operation expertise.
Samsung Heavy Industries said on the 24th that it attended the opening ceremony of the Korea-US Shipbuilding Cooperation Center (KUSPC), held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., on the 23rd, where it signed agreements related to its US business and joint research. The Korea-US Shipbuilding Cooperation Center is an organization established to support joint research between Korean and US shipbuilders and communication between governments and companies. The opening ceremony was attended by Industry and Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, among others.
Samsung Heavy Industries plans to further strengthen its business cooperation in the US following the opening of the center. On the same day, Samsung Heavy Industries and Conrad Shipyard obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the basic design of a 12,000-cubic-meter-class LNG bunkering vessel that the two companies are jointly developing. This achievement came from jointly working on the design of an LNG bunkering vessel to be built in the US, after the two companies established a partnership for joint construction of LNG bunkering vessels in December last year.
In addition, Samsung Heavy Industries signed a strategic business cooperation agreement with Saronic Technologies, a startup specializing in the design and manufacturing of unmanned surface vessels. With Saronic, the company plans to jointly research autonomous navigation of unmanned surface vessels and AI digital solution technology, and to cooperate in building production infrastructure such as robotics-based process automation.
With Vigor Marine Group, its US MRO partner, Samsung Heavy Industries signed an agreement to establish a training center in the northwestern region of the US. The training center is a facility for securing welding and coating personnel essential to shipbuilding and repair. In particular, Samsung Heavy Industries' advanced technology and expertise, including its VR and AR-based welding and coating facilities and training programs, are set to be actively utilized.
Meanwhile, at the "Korea-US International Joint R&D Agreement Ceremony" held alongside the opening ceremony, Samsung Heavy Industries signed research agreements with UCLA and welding equipment manufacturer Miller on the "Development of an AI-based Stainless Steel Spool Manufacturing System," and with the University of Texas at Dallas, San Diego State University, and California State Polytechnic University on the "Development of a Virtual Training System for Shipbuilding Workers."
Choi Sung-an, Samsung Heavy Industries' Vice Chairman and CEO, said, "The US shipbuilding cooperation projects we have been preparing will mark a new milestone with today's opening ceremony," adding, "We will do our best to usher in a renaissance for the Korea-US shipbuilding and marine industry based on Samsung Heavy Industries' technological capabilities."
