HD Hyundai Site Solution, the construction equipment intermediate holding company of HD Hyundai (267250.KS), has developed a coating that can significantly reduce carbon emissions generated during the painting process.
HD Hyundai Site Solution said on the 23rd that it had recently developed a low-temperature curing coating capable of cutting carbon emissions from the painting process for construction equipment, such as excavators and wheel loaders, by about 53%. This is equivalent to planting more than 104,000 new pine trees annually.
The company achieved the result after more than a year of research. Previously, high temperatures of 80 to 100 degrees Celsius had to be maintained to harden the coating applied to parts. The newly developed low-temperature curing coating can harden at lower temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees Celsius, sharply reducing the thermal energy required for the drying process.
HD Hyundai Site Solution changed the resin component of the coating from acrylic polyurethane to a polyaspartic type, which has a faster chemical reaction rate.
The company is testing the newly developed coating on its production lines and is pursuing its introduction at domestic sites, including its Ulsan campus as well as Incheon and Gunsan. When actually applied, it is expected to reduce the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) needed to raise the temperature of the drying process by about 320,000 cubic meters and cut carbon emissions by 689 tons annually.
In addition, the new coating produces about 69% fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions during the drying process than existing coatings, which is expected to enable a proactive response to strengthening environmental regulation standards.
HD Hyundai Site Solution has also developed special coatings with low VOCs emissions and applied them to HD Construction Equipment's operations in China and to domestic electrified product production lines. The company is also working to reduce greenhouse gases by converting production processes at domestic and overseas sites to a renewable energy basis.
"The development of the new coating is a research achievement aimed at realizing carbon reduction from the construction equipment production stage, and it will be an industry first when applied to actual mass production," an HD Hyundai Site Solution official said. "We will continue to improve the energy efficiency of our manufacturing processes and reduce greenhouse gases to achieve our goal of carbon neutrality at our sites by 2050."
