Hanwha Systems is accelerating efforts to localize defense semiconductor technologies.
The company said on July 15 that it held a Defense Semiconductor Technology Workshop with Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University. The parties also signed project agreements to develop semiconductor chips for radar, seekers, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, satellite and tactical communications, and high-power microwave (HPM) systems.
Hanwha Systems established joint defense semiconductor research centers with the two universities in March 2026. During the workshop, the company and the research centers discussed development roadmaps for key semiconductor chips and shared their long-term localization objectives. The collaboration combines the universities' semiconductor design expertise with Hanwha Systems' capabilities in systems integration and commercialization to build a domestic defense semiconductor ecosystem. Hanwha Systems is also considering adopting foundry manufacturing processes capable of supporting high-volume production.
The Hanwha Systems–Seoul National University Joint Research Center will begin developing high-linearity semiconductor chips for satellite communication terminals. The technology is designed to improve space-to-ground communication quality while enabling smaller and lighter satellite communication terminals. It is also expected to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers in space and defense communication semiconductors, an area subject to strict export controls. Hanwha Systems plans to begin deploying the chips in satellite terminals this year through 2028 before expanding their application to low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication payloads and next-generation communications base stations.
The Hanwha Systems–Sungkyunkwan University Joint Research Center will focus on securing design technologies for monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs). MMICs integrate multiple radar transmit-and-receive functions, including signal amplification and conversion, onto a single semiconductor chip. The technology reduces system size and weight while improving performance, making it a key enabling technology for active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars and small satellites.
Kwak Jong-woo, head of Hanwha Systems' Fundamental Research Institute, said the collaboration with Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University is establishing a value chain spanning semiconductor design, verification, scalability, and commercialization. He added that the company aims to enhance the performance of next-generation weapon systems through proprietary technologies while strengthening its leadership in the global defense market.
