Samsung E&A (028050.KS) has secured momentum for a share rally on the back of strong second-quarter results. The company said on the 23rd that its second-quarter operating profit rose 50% from a year earlier. Samsung E&A shares, which had lingered in the low 40,000-won range, jumped more than 20% intraday, bringing a return to the 50,000-won level within reach.
According to the Korea Exchange, Samsung E&A closed at 46,650 won on the 23rd, up 5,350 won, or 12.95%, from the previous trading day. The stock climbed as high as 49,700 won intraday around 1 p.m. Since closing at 51,700 won on the 1st of this month, the shares had consistently traded around the 40,000-won level.
The second-quarter earnings announcement has been identified as the driver behind the share rally. Samsung E&A reported consolidated second-quarter revenue of 2.6039 trillion won and operating profit of 273.1 billion won. Compared with the same period last year, these figures represent increases of 19.8% and 51.0%, respectively. Second-quarter net profit also rose 28.8% year-on-year to 182.5 billion won.
The results are believed to reflect the benefits of large-scale project financing and cost improvements. Samsung E&A recorded 7.6 trillion won in new orders through the first half. Specifically, these were divided into the chemical division (3.4 trillion won), the advanced industry division (2.4 trillion won), and the new energy division (1.8 trillion won).
