- Nikkei Asia

OSAKA/TAIPEI -- Japan's Daikin Industries plans to add another factory in Mexico that makes cooling systems for data centers, aiming to expand its sales beyond North America as AI infrastructure is being built in Europe, India and other markets.
The new plant, with an investment estimated at 10 billion yen ($62.9 million), will join Daikin's two factories at an industrial park in Tijuana, a city in northwestern Mexico.
Daikin projects revenue of 800 billion yen -- just over $5 billion -- from the data center cooling business in fiscal 2030, more than five times its fiscal 2025 figure. This business is expected to lift the air conditioner maker's overall revenue, which reached 5 trillion yen in fiscal 2025.
"Hyperscalers are announcing large-scale investment plans in Europe, such as in Spain," said Masaaki Miyatake, executive officer at Daikin. "If we can capture that demand, we can grow our business."
In March, Amazon said it would invest 33.7 billion euros ($39.3 billion) to expand its data center infrastructure in Spain.
Daikin's new Mexican factory will produce air handling units, which act as large fans to send cooled air into data center server rooms. Trial production is slated to begin in January, with full production planned for June.
The Japanese company also plans to add a fourth production line for chillers at a plant in San Luis Potosi state in central Mexico. Chillers create cold air to lower the temperature inside data centers.
Daikin supplies data center cooling equipment in North America from production hubs in the U.S., Mexico and elsewhere. This business produces revenue of about 150 billion yen, with half coming from hyperscalers.
Cooling equipment has become increasingly important to data centers as advanced graphics processing units produce more heat.
North American demand remains strong, pushing Daikin to add more engineers who upgrade and maintain cooling systems. The company employs around 1,000 engineers specializing in large-scale air conditioning in the U.S.
"About three times the current number of personnel will be needed to keep pace with business expansion," Miyatake said.
Daikin will seek to bring on new talent through acquisitions as well as by training staff in-house.
Daikin envisions 500 billion yen in North American revenue by fiscal 2030, up from its previous target of 300 billion yen, compared with the current 150 billion yen. The company also eyes revenue of 200 billion yen in new markets such as Europe and the Middle East, as well as 100 billion yen in India and other Asian markets.
The global data center cooling market is expected to reach $54.4 billion in 2034, India-based Fortune Business Insights reports, up from $18.8 billion in 2025.
Taiwanese manufacturers such as Foxconn and Wistron plan to invest in artificial intelligence server operations in Mexico. Japan's Panasonic Holdings looks to begin mass production of data center energy storage systems in Mexico next fiscal year.
