Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang signaled a $500 billion partnership with SK Group.
Huang met with President Lee Jae Myung at a hotel in San Francisco on July 24 local time and said, "We plan to announce a business partnership with SK Group today," adding that "it amounts to $500 billion." He continued that Nvidia "will form partnerships with SK hynix and Samsung Electronics on chip design and memory design."
Nvidia will also make an investment in Naver. "Naver is Korea's leading cloud company," Huang said. "Through this partnership, we will support its business expansion in Korea and its expansion globally."
Huang also told President Lee about Nvidia's cooperation with LG. "We are developing power generation systems with LG that can be used in factories and homes," he said.
Nvidia announced its cooperation with KAIST a day earlier. The gist is that they will cooperate on areas such as large language model (LLM) development, artificial intelligence (AI) chips and physical AI. Huang said, "Our leading researchers will relocate from California to South Korea."
President Lee told Huang, "Our government has launched three mega projects and is preparing an AI-centered society and nation," adding, "I hope CEO Jensen Huang will also play a big role."
Lee also mentioned that Hyundai Motor Group is making robotics investments in the Saemangeum area of North Jeolla Province. "Young people in Korea and residents of the Jeonbuk region also have enormous expectations," Lee said. Nvidia is cooperating with Hyundai Motor on autonomous driving for Genesis, its premium vehicle line.
That day, President Lee visited San Francisco with domestic executives including Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun and Naver board chair Lee Hae-jin. At the San Francisco AI Summit the same day, Lee declared that South Korea "will become a trusted AI semiconductor production base and supply chain partner, backed by world-class memory semiconductor competitiveness and production capabilities."
