Gaon Cable (000500.KS) will supply distribution cables to an "on-site power plant" that a US global big tech company is building ahead of constructing an artificial intelligence (AI) data center. Following busducts, which are power equipment for data centers, the company is now expanding its business scope to power plant cables, pursuing a strategy to win turnkey orders covering the entire data center power grid.
On the 28th, Gaon Cable said it will supply approximately 50 billion won worth of distribution cables to a self-built power plant project pursued by a US global big tech company. This marks the first time Gaon Cable has supplied cables for a US big tech company's power plant project.
This project is an on-site power generation initiative pursued by the big tech company to preemptively secure the power needed to operate a large-scale AI data center. Rather than waiting for grid connections or supply contracts with power companies, the company aims to first build its own power source near the data center to stably secure the electricity needed for future server expansion.
The distribution cables supplied by Gaon Cable are used to deliver electricity produced at the power plant to internal equipment and substation facilities. They are products used in distribution networks that distribute power within the plant, rather than in transmission networks that send power from plants to substations.
The significance of this order goes beyond simply supplying power plant cables. This is because if the big tech company begins full-scale data center construction after completing the power plant, it could lead to follow-up orders for internal distribution equipment such as busducts and medium- and low-voltage cables.
While its US business has previously grown around data center busducts supplied by LSCUS, this time the Korean headquarters is directly supplying power plant cables, expanding its supply chain into the power source construction field. In the industry, there is an assessment that the company has established a business structure capable of simultaneously supplying cables and power equipment in future projects that link power plants with data centers.
Gaon Cable's US export volume is also rapidly increasing. As the supply of cables for AI data centers and power plants moves into full swing this year, US exports are expected to expand to approximately 300 billion won, about triple the level of last year.
"With the spread of AI data centers, not only the transmission market but also the distribution market is growing rapidly," said Jung Hyun, CEO of Gaon Cable. "Based on our competitiveness as the No. 1 player in Korea's distribution cable market, we will strengthen our push into the global market by supplying cables and power equipment together."
