Hyosung Heavy Industries said on the 29th that it had won an order for six 500kV ultra-high-voltage transformers from Andritz Hydro, a company specializing in hydropower and generation equipment, on the 28th.
Andritz Hydro is the Brazilian subsidiary of Austria-based Andritz and has handled more than 25% of the country's hydropower capacity. For 30 years, it has established itself as a key partner to major local power companies and a leading provider of equipment and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services.
The ultra-high-voltage transformers to be supplied this time will be used at the Foz do Areia hydropower plant in the state of Paraná, Brazil.
Brazil has the world's second-largest hydropower generation capacity and produces 60% of its total electricity from hydropower. Recently, the Brazilian government has been pursuing a large-scale expansion of generation capacity due to increased electricity demand from industrial development. In particular, at Foz do Areia, the existing generation capacity of 1,676 megawatts (MW) is being expanded to 2,536 MW.
Hyosung Heavy Industries also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate on developing a "hybrid STATCOM" that combines its STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) with Andritz Hydro's synchronous condenser.
STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are key facilities that stably maintain voltage and frequency in the power system. They are mainly used in renewable energy generation such as wind and solar power, which fluctuate rapidly depending on weather conditions. The STATCOM, a semiconductor-based control device, responds quickly to voltage fluctuations, while the synchronous condenser provides inertia and stability to the power grid through rotating machinery, allowing the two facilities to work complementarily.
Meanwhile, the two companies agreed to continue their long-term partnership, including gaining an early lead in the Latin American power stabilization market based on their technological capabilities and market experience.
