OCI (456040.KS) delivered a significantly improved earnings report for the second quarter this year, driven by strong performance in petrochemical products and semiconductor materials.
OCI said its second-quarter operating profit (on a consolidated basis) came to 43.3 billion won, marking a swing to profit compared with the same period last year, according to a regulatory filing on the 22nd. Revenue over the same period rose 1.5% to 535 billion won.
The Basic Chemicals division, which includes semiconductor materials, posted revenue of 209.5 billion won and operating profit of 18.1 billion won on price increases in some products. Earnings improved as sales volumes of chlor-alkali (CA) and other products rose on a base effect from the completion of scheduled maintenance and recovering product demand, while prices of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) rose amid supply disruptions caused by the U.S.-Iran war.
The Carbon Chemicals division generated revenue of 331.5 billion won and operating profit of 31 billion won, on widening spreads for benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) products amid strong oil prices. In the third quarter, product spreads are expected to stabilize downward as oil prices decline on easing geopolitical risks, but OCI expects it will be able to maintain profitability through improved margins from the expansion of conductive carbon black, a high-value-added material, and increased sales of pitch.
OCI plans to continue expanding its investment in new semiconductor materials businesses in response to rising materials demand driven by the government's policy to nurture the semiconductor industry and large-scale investment expansion by major customers. The company aims to strengthen its business competitiveness and secure future growth engines, focusing on advanced materials used in next-generation businesses such as artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.
OCI is newly entering the wafer reclaim business for semiconductor packaging to secure future growth engines. Through the acquisition of OCI Specialty, the company plans to actively utilize existing production infrastructure to improve the investment efficiency of the reclaimed wafer business and pursue early commercialization. The facility is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2027, and the company will consider additional expansion after the start of commercial sales, taking future market demand into account.
OCI is also producing tangible results in the high-value-added chemical materials sector. It recently completed an expansion of conductive carbon black, a key material used in ultra-high-voltage cables, and began initial shipments to major customers in early July. Having secured additional annual production capacity of 30,000 tons, the company plans to actively respond to demand for building ultra-high-voltage power grids driven by the spread of AI data centers and expanding renewable energy investment.
"In the second quarter, we continued steady profit growth backed by improved market conditions for basic chemical products and growth in the semiconductor materials business," OCI Vice Chairman Kim Yoo-shin said. "We will advance our business portfolio by expanding investment in high-value-added advanced materials such as the wafer reclaim business for semiconductor packaging and conductive carbon black, and further strengthen our growth foundation in line with the growth of the AI and semiconductor industries."
