Hana Financial Group, which has formed a strategic alliance with Dunamu, the operator of cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, has presented a vision for the two companies to become dominant players in the won-denominated stablecoin market. The plan is to jointly build a digital finance ecosystem that connects blockchain-based cross-border remittance and comprehensive asset management, centered on stablecoins. In particular, the group said it would pursue a platform partnership between Hana Bank and Upbit, signaling that the two could collaborate in the real-name account sector.
According to financial industry sources on the 21st, top executives of the two companies agreed at a recent meeting that the significance of their strategic partnership lies in jointly developing mid- to long-term digital asset financial infrastructure and contributing to the industry ecosystem as a whole.
The two companies plan to build their cooperation on three pillars: establishing domestic standards for financial infrastructure technology, revitalizing the digital asset industry ecosystem, and providing comprehensive asset management.
In detail, they will lay the groundwork for a "K-blockchain" by combining Dunamu's technological capabilities with Hana Bank's stable financial infrastructure. The plan is to offer genuine comprehensive asset management by pairing Dunamu's digital asset expertise with Hana Financial's traditional financial services. Through this, they aim to help South Korea rise to become one of the Group of Two (G2) in the digital asset sector.
At the center of the cooperation is the won-denominated stablecoin. The two companies presented a blueprint to jointly create a won stablecoin ecosystem and establish themselves as dominant players in the market. Hana Financial is expected to handle traditional financial infrastructure such as reserve asset management, payment and settlement, and foreign exchange operations, while Dunamu provides blockchain technology and digital asset distribution capabilities. Once related regulations are put in place—including the issuing entity of won stablecoins, the method of managing reserve assets, the scope of work between financial sectors, and the information-sharing system—the actual launch of services is expected to accelerate.
The core technology infrastructure will be "GIWA," a public blockchain network developed in-house by Dunamu. Based on GIWA, the two companies plan to build a won stablecoin operating system and gradually pursue a blockchain-based cross-border remittance service. The idea is to simplify the process of existing international remittance, which required going through multiple intermediary banks, using blockchain and stablecoins to reduce remittance time and costs. For the related cross-border remittance service, they also plan to pursue designation as an innovative financial service from financial authorities.
The two companies also shared their determination to jointly enter the global digital asset market and achieve an insurmountable lead over competitors. In addition, through the partnership between Hana Bank and Upbit, they will pursue corporate transactions, linked products, and joint service marketing. A financial industry official said, "In practice, this would be difficult without a real-name account link." Currently, Upbit has a real-name account bank contract with K bank, which expires in October.
Earlier, Hana Financial acquired a 6.6% stake in Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, for about 1 trillion won through Hana Bank, becoming the fourth-largest shareholder. Chairman Ham Young-joo, who attended the meeting, stressed, "Together with Dunamu, we will create a bigger future that no one has ever reached."
