Hyundai Motor will equip the eighth-generation Avante, scheduled for launch in the second half of this year, with a display supplied by China's BOE. The move marks BOE's entry into Hyundai's best-selling passenger car, extending the influence of Chinese display makers beyond televisions and further into the automotive industry.
According to industry sources on July 28, BOE VX, a subsidiary of China's BOE, recently began mass production of a 14.6-inch quantum dot (QD) Mini LED center display for Hyundai's new Avante. BOE VX will supply the display panel and module to AUMOVIO, formerly Continental's automotive business, which will assemble the finished display system and deliver it to Hyundai.
BOE VX initially developed the product using only a vehicle platform code provided by Hyundai rather than a specific model name. Although the final vehicle had not been determined during development, industry sources said the display has ultimately been designated for the new-generation Avante.
The production model features a 14.6-inch advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) LCD equipped with a QD Mini LED backlight. It offers a resolution of 2,560 × 1,440, peak brightness of 1,000 nits, and 627 local dimming zones, enabling a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. The adoption of QD Mini LED is believed to be linked to Hyundai's next-generation Pleos infotainment platform, whose user interface is centered on the display.
This marks the first time BOE VX has supplied Hyundai with a QD Mini LED center display larger than 10 inches. The company had previously supplied smaller 5.3-inch and 7.5-inch center displays using conventional LED backlighting. QD technology enhances color reproduction, producing brighter and more vivid images.
QD Mini LED technology uses blue Mini LEDs and quantum dot materials in the LCD backlight unit to generate white light. Compared with conventional LCDs, it delivers higher contrast, brightness and color reproduction while remaining more cost-effective than organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. Hyundai recently developed its third-generation automotive display platform, which comes in 9.9-inch, 14.6-inch and 17-inch versions, all adopting QD Mini LED technology.
Production of the new Avante is now expected to begin in September, later than the original August launch schedule. The timeline could still be brought forward depending on component availability. The delay stems from a fire at the Daejeon plant of automotive parts supplier Anjeon Industrial in March.
Anjeon Industrial supplies engine valves to Hyundai Motor and Kia. The factory fire at the plant in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, disrupted engine valve production, prompting adjustments to engine and vehicle production schedules for several models. Although BOE VX has already entered mass production, the delay in vehicle assembly has also postponed a broader ramp-up in display shipments.
BOE VX was established after BOE acquired Hong Kong-based automotive display company Varitronix in 2016. The subsidiary's businesses include display panels, display modules, optical bonding, touch solutions, printed circuit boards (PCBs), head-up displays (HUDs), and automotive system integration.
