Hanwha Group plans to invest 55 trillion won in the aerospace and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors by 2040, establishing an independent space infrastructure encompassing launch vehicles, satellites and defense AI data centers, with South Korea's Yeongnam region serving as its strategic base.
Hanwha Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan announced the group's long-term investment strategy on July 3 during the National Vision Report for Advanced Industry Development in the Yeongnam region.
The investment will be carried out by two Hanwha affiliates, Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems, over the period from this year through 2040.
Hanwha Aerospace will invest 23 trillion won in launch vehicle development. The company plans to build an integrated assembly facility and launch vehicle development and testing infrastructure, enabling a transition to commercial launch services while securing independent space transportation capabilities.
The company will also invest 2 trillion won in defense AI to develop both crewed and uncrewed aerial and ground weapon systems, as well as integrated manned-unmanned air combat capabilities.
Hanwha Systems will invest 20 trillion won in satellite technologies. The company plans to establish its own very low Earth orbit (VLEO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, a space-based AI data center and a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications network to secure defense AI data sources and communications infrastructure.
The architecture consists of three layers: an Earth observation satellite constellation at an altitude of 350 kilometers to collect ground and maritime intelligence, a space AI data center at 400 kilometers, and a LEO satellite communications network at 900 kilometers to enable real-time data transmission.
Hanwha Systems plans to launch 64 SAR satellites by 2031 to provide continuous real-time surveillance. The communications network will initially begin service with 192 satellites, followed by an additional 60 satellites to replace aging spacecraft and expand coverage over the Arctic region. All of the satellites will be launched aboard vehicles developed by Hanwha Aerospace.
The group also plans to build a defense AI data center in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Energy will jointly invest 10 trillion won, each contributing an equal share. The facility will begin operations this year with a capacity of 45 megawatts (MW) and will be expanded in phases to 135 MW by 2032. Electricity demand will be supplied through Hanwha Energy's power generation assets.
The group will invest an additional 2 trillion won to develop Defense OS, a defense AI model for battlefield data training and inference. The project is scheduled for completion by 2040 and aims to transform systems including the K9 self-propelled howitzer, unmanned surface vessels, unmanned underwater vehicles and autonomous drones into intelligent weapon platforms. It will also strengthen manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities and counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS).
"The first step toward securing space sovereignty is developing our own launch vehicle," Kim said. "We will ensure that South Korea has the capability to reach space whenever it chooses."
