Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and difficult or infrequent bowel movements. The condition can significantly affect daily activities and quality of life.
IBSRELA (tenapanor) is a locally acting inhibitor of the sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) that reduces intestinal sodium absorption, increases water content in the intestines, and helps soften stools. It is approved in the U.S. for treating IBS-C in adults.
Real-World Analysis Shows Reduced Healthcare Utilization
A retrospective, observational analysis evaluated 470 adults with IBS-C who initiated tenapanor at a national gastroenterology practice. Researchers compared gastrointestinal-related healthcare resource utilization during the year before and after treatment initiation.

Significant reductions were also observed among patients who had previously tried at least one IBS-C medication, regardless of body mass index (BMI) or comorbidity burden.
