Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is establishing a cooperative framework to strengthen helicopter safety management across both military and civil aviation sectors.
KAI said on July 3 that it hosted a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding on Advancing Civil-Military Airworthiness Cooperation at its headquarters. The event was organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and jointly hosted by KAI and the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology.
The centerpiece of the agreement is the sharing of military helicopter operational data and safety management experience with the civil helicopter sector. Because the number of civil helicopters in operation is relatively small, civil operators have faced limitations in safety management due to insufficient defect and reliability data.
Under the agreement, operational data from the domestically developed Surion utility helicopter used by the military, police and Coast Guard will be applied to civil operations, including firefighting and forestry services, with the aim of improving fleet availability and operational safety.
Since delivering its first Surion helicopter to the police in 2013, KAI has signed contracts for 42 helicopters with public-sector organizations, including the Korea Forest Service, fire authorities and the Korea Coast Guard. Thirty aircraft have been deployed into service. In 2022, the Surion received a Restricted Type Certificate from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, establishing the foundation for civilian operations.
Song Ho-cheol, KAI executive vice president and head of the production and operations division, said the initiative would strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea's rotary-wing aircraft industry, support the development of the domestic helicopter ecosystem and contribute to expanding exports.
