SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won will speak at the Tokyo Forum in Japan for a second straight year, continuing his push for economic cooperation between South Korea and Japan.
Chey will take part as a speaker at Tokyo Forum 2026, to be held Nov. 20-21 at Yasuda Auditorium at the University of Tokyo, business sources said on the 13th.
The Tokyo Forum, launched in 2019, is an annual international event co-hosted by the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Tokyo. This year's forum will run under the theme "Artificial Intelligence as a Transformative Technology: Humans, Knowledge and Civilization," addressing AI's impact on society and industry as well as the changes and challenges brought by technological advances.
Chey will deliver a video message at the opening ceremony on the first day and attend the Business Leader Session the following day. The session will also feature University of Tokyo President Teruo Fujii, Taejae University President Yeom Jae-ho and Sophia University President Miki Sugiura.
Chey has attended the Tokyo Forum every year in his capacity as chairman of the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies. At last year's forum, he used the Business Leader Session to propose that the two countries join forces in energy, healthcare and startups to build a "low-cost society" that reduces costs across the economy as a whole.
Chey has consistently emphasized expanding economic cooperation between the two countries. In June, at a special Korea-Japan session of the Nikkei Forum held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, he floated the idea of a "big tent," a permanent consultative body for cooperation in semiconductors, AI and energy. In August, at a meeting of the heads of the Korea-Japan chambers of commerce and industry in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, he discussed supply chain stability, energy security and cooperation in future industries with business leaders from both countries. At the time, Chey said of plans for an SK hynix semiconductor plant in Japan that the company was reviewing the matter and would announce a decision once the review was complete.
