KakaoBank said it will invest an additional 150 billion won in Marston Capital, which it acquired in June, and launch its full-scale business starting with auto finance early next year.
Kwon Tae-hoon, head of KakaoBank's management strategy group and chief financial officer, said at a first-half earnings conference call on the 5th, "We plan to carry out paid-in capital increases totaling 150 billion won in two rounds." He added, "Through the capital increase, we will expand the asset size to more than 1 trillion won."
KakaoBank previously signed a share purchase agreement (SPA) in June to acquire a 100% stake in Marston Capital. The company plans to obtain approval from the Financial Services Commission (FSC) within the year and launch new services in the first half of next year. "We have set a goal of turning to profit by the end of next year," Kwon said. "Over the medium to long term, we will achieve a double-digit return on equity (ROE) by 2030."
KakaoBank plans to expand Marston Capital's business portfolio starting with auto finance. The plan is to first grow assets centered on used-car installment financing in collaboration with domestic auto distribution platforms. It then intends to gradually expand into corporate and investment finance.
Along with the capital business, KakaoBank is also stepping up efforts to strengthen its platform competitiveness. To expand non-interest income, it plans to launch its second private label credit card (PLCC) with Shinhan Card as early as this month. It is the second co-branded card that KakaoBank is introducing in partnership with Shinhan Card.
KakaoBank posted a net profit of 328 billion won in the first half of this year, achieving its highest-ever half-year performance. In addition to interest income centered on loans to sole proprietors, it diversified its non-interest business, earning 589.5 billion won from related operations. "This year we focused on loans to sole proprietors, and starting next year we plan to fully grow corporate finance including small and medium-sized enterprises," Kwon said. "We expect it will be possible to achieve our goal of 100 trillion won in assets next year."
