TOKYO -- Fujitsu will begin exporting AI semiconductors that are developed with technology used in its supercomputer "Fugaku" to the U.S. and Asia as early as next year.
The company will sell its homegrown advanced AI CPU, Monaka. With the rapid spread of artificial intelligence, demand is growing for central processing units used in AI inference -- processing information to produce appropriate answers.
Fujitsu has already secured a supply contract with SuperMicro Computer, a major U.S. server manufacturer, and will also market to major U.S. cloud providers.
While Japanese companies have developed and manufactured CPUs, most have withdrawn from the market, leaving U.S. companies such as Intel with a high market share.
Until now, Fujitsu has primarily used advanced semiconductors for AI in its own products, with limited external supply. This will be the first time the company markets them on a large scale.
The Monaka circuit line width is 2 nanometers, significantly improving computing performance per unit of power consumption. Power efficiency was enhanced by leveraging technology used in high-performance semiconductors for Fugaku and its predecessor, the K computer.
Monaka's manufacturing will be outsourced to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. For the cutting-edge 1.4-nm product, which Fujitsu plans to begin supplying in 2029, production will likely be outsourced to Japanese chipmaker Rapidus.
In addition to Monaka, the company will also begin selling AI servers equipped with Monaka both domestically and internationally. Trial servers have already been installed at 24 companies in finance and telecommunications, and Fujitsu is in talks with more than 40 companies for adoption.
A Fujitsu plant in Ishikawa prefecture that manufactures mainframes will gradually switch to AI servers.
Fujitsu aims to achieve cumulative sales of 250 billion yen ($1.6 billion) by fiscal 2030 through external sales of CPUs. Separately, it seeks to sell 60,000 AI servers. In addition to CPUs and servers, it will also propose platforms to customers that support AI development and operation, aiming to expand its related businesses.
Driven by AI demand, the semiconductor market is expected to surge 90% on the year to 240 trillion yen in 2026, according to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics, an industry group. Logic components such as CPUs, as well as advanced AI-related products, such as memory chips, are driving shipments.
While Japan has strengths in semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials, its presence in advanced semiconductors is limited. TSMC and Samsung Electronics are expanding semiconductor supply overseas, and Taiwan and South Korea each surpassed Japan in total export value in the January-June period of this year.
