Young Poong (000670) has demanded that Korea Zinc (010130) immediately halt what it called the privatization of the Korea Nonferrous Metals Association. The dispute over control of Korea Zinc has now spilled over into the industry association.
In a statement on the 31st, Young Poong said, "We strongly condemn the senseless 'gapjil' behavior of Korea Zinc's management, which treats a 70-year-old public-interest industry body as its own lackey and destroys the order of the industrial ecosystem."
The trigger was a Young Poong press release on the 24th describing a visit by association executives to the Seokpo smelter. Young Poong claimed that although it had shared a draft of the press release with the association in advance and distributed it normally after sufficient mutual review and prior agreement, the association was pressured by Korea Zinc into posting a statement that distorted the intent of the press release.
Young Poong argued that Korea Zinc's management, using its industry influence, intimidated the association's executives and forced the withdrawal of a properly distributed press release, revisions to articles, and even the posting of a statement that distorted the facts — a clear case of "privatization gapjil" that mistakes the association as its own exclusive property. Young Poong urged Korea Zinc's management to stop exerting improper external pressure on the association, which was established to promote information exchange among member companies and the development of related industries, and to issue a formal apology to the industry, member companies, and the public.
Young Poong also said the association should regain a neutral and objective stance as an industry body, rather than being dragged along by the unreasonable claims of a particular member company and used as a tool for smear campaigns. In particular, it noted that Young Poong's late founder, Chairman Chang Byung-hee, had served as the second, third, and fourth chairman of the association.
