Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has begun the process of selecting its next chief executive. As stable electricity supply emerges as a core requirement for national competitiveness alongside the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, attention is focused on the appointment more than ever, given that KEPCO is leading tasks such as expanding renewable energy and building large-scale transmission networks.
KEPCO's executive recommendation committee posted the CEO recruitment notice on the 6th. The process began early because the term of KEPCO CEO Kim Dong-cheol expires on September 19. Those seeking the position must submit their application, personal statement, and job performance plan to the committee from that day until 6 p.m. on the 14th. The KEPCO CEO serves a basic three-year term, with the possibility of a one-year extension depending on performance.
Names of former and current officials and politicians are being floated as candidates for the next KEPCO CEO. Lee Ho-hyun, the second vice minister of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, who currently oversees the Lee Jae-myung administration's energy policy, is mentioned as a candidate. He is regarded as having a higher understanding of the government's energy policy than anyone else.
Jang Jae-hoon, former CEO of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), is also among the candidates. During his time in public service, Jang served as head of the energy and resources office at the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and later served as KHNP CEO during the Moon Jae-in administration. Kang Ki-jung, former mayor of Gwangju, is also known to be highly likely to run for the KEPCO CEO position. His strength lies in his long political activity in the Gwangju and South Jeolla region, where KEPCO's headquarters is located and where the density of renewable energy power plants is high.
The next KEPCO CEO is expected to need not only high expertise in energy policy but also public communication skills and political acumen. This is because the era of 100 GW of renewable energy must be opened by 2030, and the power infrastructure supply needed to push forward mega projects is also urgent.
The process of integrating five power generation state-owned companies requires considerable organizational management and interest-coordination capabilities. Communication skills are also an important evaluation item, given that most of the challenges KEPCO faces require resolving conflicts with local residents and coordinating differences between local governments.
