"Hip Buddhism," a playful reinterpretation of Buddhist imagery and teachings aimed at younger consumers, has become a reliable draw in South Korea, prompting retailers to roll out one Buddhism-themed event after another.
Lotte Mall is running a "Hip Buddhism" pop-up store at its Gimpo Airport branch through the 9th of this month, offering a range of Buddhism-themed merchandise, retail industry sources said on the 5th. Four brands that recast Buddhist images and messages in a contemporary style are taking part, selling lifestyle goods including T-shirts, key rings, mugs and accessories.
The participating brands are Hip Buddhs, Hanabanama, Buddha reul Butda and Nirva. Featured items include a "Don't Avoid It, Be Happy" mug, a "Sentient Being" doll key ring, a "Six-Syllable Mantra" chain bracelet and an "I Love Buddha" T-shirt.
The pop-up also expands hands-on content. Hip Buddhs is giving away free "Gapito" instant blessing lottery tickets, which apply Buddhist teachings to everyday worries with a light touch. Visitors can also write a wish on a note and post it on a wall at the pop-up store; after the event ends, the notes are delivered to a temple, where monks pray on the visitors' behalf.
Lotte Mall turned to a Buddhism-themed pop-up because the religion's philosophy and messages, recast to suit younger tastes, have become a proven formula for drawing crowds. "The Buddhism expo drew attention and wrapped up successfully this year, and that sparked a boom," an industry official said. "It is unusual content that appeals to young customers, and at the same time families can enjoy it without any hesitation, so retailers are actively trying Buddhism-themed pop-ups."
Retailers say the trend is translating into sales. Earlier this year, I'Park Mall opened its second Buddhism-themed pop-up at its Yongsan branch with the Buddhist brand Haetal Company. It followed up after the first pop-up, held in June last year, drew an average of about 1,000 visitors a day.
Lotte Department Store also ran a Buddhism-themed pop-up in July at Sisihosi, a lifestyle curation shop at its main Busan store. About 3,000 customers made purchases over one week, and shoppers in their 20s and 30s accounted for roughly 80% of the total.
"Brands that reinterpret Buddhism are being received by younger generations as a fresh and entertaining cultural experience, and by older generations as content that offers insight into life," said Park Jae-woo, who heads the shoes and handbags team for Lotte Department Store's outlets and malls. "Through trendy, unconventional pop-ups that reflect customer tastes, we will deliver enjoyment that spans generations and a differentiated experience."
