The Ottogi (007310) Ham Tae-ho Foundation said on the 26th that it had presented the 34th Ottogi Ham Tae-ho Academic Award to Lee Hae-jeong, a professor at Gachon University, along with a plaque and 30 million won in prize money. The ceremony was held jointly with the Korean Nutrition Society on the 23rd at Seoul Dragon City in Seoul's Yongsan district.
Lee was recognized for her contributions to research on tailored public health promotion and to building the foundation for national nutrition research. She helped establish the framework for the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and led efforts to upgrade the nutrition survey database of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. She also conducted human trials on traditional foods and functional ingredients and identified their mechanisms of action, broadening the academic and industrial applications of such research. Lee is currently a full member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology and has published 185 SCI(E)-indexed papers, holds 16 domestic and international patents and has completed six technology transfers.
The foundation has been running research grant programs since 2013. Through this year, it has provided 14.1 billion won in research funding to a total of 92 recipients. It established the Ottogi Ham Tae-ho Academic Award in 2009 and has since selected researchers who contributed to the development of the food industry and improvements in dietary life each year, in cooperation with the Korean Society of Food Science and Technology and the Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition. Starting this year, it added the Korean Nutrition Society, considered one of the three major academic societies in the food and nutrition field, widening the pool of candidates.
"We are pursuing academic promotion programs to broaden the base of the food and nutrition field and to invigorate academic exchange and research activities," a foundation official said. "We plan to continue providing support in various ways to advance and strengthen the competitiveness of Korea's food and nutrition academia."
