Hyundai Rotem (064350.KS) has developed an armored ambulance using domestic technology, a vehicle set to advance battlefield emergency medical care.
The company said on the 1st that it had completed a system development program for an armored medical evacuation vehicle commissioned by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. Over roughly two years beginning in 2024, Hyundai Rotem carried out the entire development process — design, prototype production and test evaluation — with domestic technology. The program cost about 14.5 billion won.
The armored medical evacuation vehicle is an armored ambulance that transports battlefield casualties to rear medical facilities. It is based on the wheeled command post vehicle, already fielded by the South Korean military with proven protection and mobility, allowing it to move patients safely and quickly across rough terrain, bad weather and hostile conditions near the front line. The company expects the vehicle to help secure the golden hour that determines whether a patient survives.
The vehicle was designed to transport patients safely while also accommodating medical personnel. The first priority was ample interior space for emergency treatment during transport and for mounting medical equipment. Hyundai Rotem used the wheeled command post vehicle as its platform because its interior height is greater than that of a standard wheeled armored vehicle, then configured the space specifically for medical evacuation. The result is a cabin that can carry up to six ambulatory patients, or four patients on stretchers, with two medics on board.
The vehicle also carries medical systems comparable to those in civilian ambulances so that wounded soldiers can be transported in stable condition. High-brightness LED interior lights illuminate the cabin for medical work, and a stretcher loading device allows patients to be moved in and out while lying down. Advanced equipment and supplies including an oxygen supply unit, a defibrillator and a patient monitor are also on board for emergency treatment and recovery.
Beyond this vehicle, Hyundai Rotem is applying advanced defense technology to protect lives and improve public safety. An unmanned firefighting robot developed with the National Fire Agency using unmanned systems technology is deployed in place of people at fires and other disaster sites to protect civilians and firefighters. An AI-based unmanned turret counter-drone layered defense system now under development can be mounted on tanks, armored vehicles and other platforms to shield crews from external threats.
The new vehicle also strengthens Hyundai Rotem's wheeled armored vehicle lineup, which the company expects to improve its competitiveness in global markets when mass production begins. The wheeled armored vehicle incorporates a modular design, making it easier to build variants for different purposes and missions.
"By successfully completing system development of the armored medical evacuation vehicle, we expect to contribute to transporting battlefield casualties more safely and quickly," a Hyundai Rotem official said. "Under the conviction that national security is public safety, we will lead innovation in defense technology that protects the safety and lives of both soldiers and citizens."
