) announced Wednesday that the U.S. FDA has approved Rhapsido for adults with symptomatic dermographism whose symptoms remain inadequately controlled by H1 antihistamines. The approval makes Rhapsido the first FDA-approved treatment specifically for this condition.
Symptomatic dermographism (SD) is the most common form of chronic inducible urticaria, or chronic hives. In people with the condition, everyday skin friction, scratching, or rubbing can trigger itchy hives and skin reactions. More than half of patients remain symptomatic despite treatment with antihistamines.
Rhapsido (remibrutinib) is an oral, highly selective Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor (BTKi). With this approval, it becomes the only prescription medicine approved for both symptomatic dermographism and chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) when antihistamines alone do not adequately control symptoms.
The
FDA approval
was based on data from the Phase 3 RemIND trial in patients whose symptoms remained uncontrolled despite second-generation H1 antihistamines. In the study, significantly more patients treated with Rhapsido achieved complete response from hive at Week 12 compared with placebo (29.3% versus 14.0%) with responses observed as early as Week 2.
According to Novartis, Rhapsido demonstrated a safety profile in symptomatic dermographism that was consistent with its previously approved use in chronic spontaneous urticaria, and the treatment does not require routine laboratory monitoring.
The approval expands the use of Rhapsido beyond chronic spontaneous urticaria, for which it received FDA approval in September 2025. Novartis said the decision further supports the potential of BTK inhibition in immune-mediated diseases.
Rhapsido is also being evaluated in other immune-related conditions, including food allergy and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
NVS has traded between $121.57 and $170.46 over the past year. The stock closed Wednesday's trading at $143.28, up 1.77%. In pre-market trading the stock is at $141.88, down 0.96%.
