South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service released card loan figures that were tallied incorrectly in an official press release.
The FSS said on the 31st that it was redistributing the release after correcting parts of the reference material "due to an error in the statistical aggregation process."
The material in question was the FSS's "First-Half 2026 Operating Results for Specialized Credit Finance Companies (Preliminary)," published on the 27th. The agency initially said card loan usage in the first half of this year totaled 56.1 trillion won ($40.4 billion), up 4.6 trillion won, or 9.0%, from 51.5 trillion won a year earlier. But in the corrected version issued five days later, the figure was revised to 50.7 trillion won — a decline of 800 billion won, or 1.5%, from the same period last year.
The gap between the original figure and the actual amount alone reaches 5.4 trillion won. The year-on-year change also flipped direction, from a 9.0% increase to a 1.5% decrease.
The error was most pronounced in card loans, the long-term lending product offered by credit card issuers. The FSS initially put first-half card loan usage at 28 trillion won, saying it had surged 4.8 trillion won, or 20.9%, from a year earlier. The actual amount was corrected to 22.6 trillion won, down 600 billion won, or 2.4%, from a year earlier. Card loan usage was also 5.4 trillion won lower than the original figure.
The mistake went beyond a simple typo, conveying the opposite direction of the trend in outstanding card loan balances. When the release showed card loan usage jumping more than 20%, the financial industry read it as a sign of rising demand among vulnerable borrowers for stretching their finances to invest with borrowed money. With the actual figures showing a decline, that reading has been rendered meaningless.
Critics say statistical management — the foundation of financial market supervision — has grown lax while internal attention has been focused on organizational issues, including the agency's planned relocation to Busan. The FSS compiles and publishes operating results for specialized credit finance companies on a semiannual basis. "In finance, numbers are everything, and there is no excuse for a supervisory authority getting the most basic figures wrong," one industry official said.
