Samyang Innochem与Graphy签署生物基牙科材料联合开发协议，仍处研发前期

Samyang Innochem is expanding the application of isosorbide, an eco-friendly bio-material previously limited to chemical materials, into the medical device sector.
Samyang Innochem announced on the 22nd that it signed a "Bio-Material-Based Dental Solution Joint Development Agreement" with Graphy, a company specializing in 3D printing dental materials, on the 21st.
Under the agreement, Samyang Innochem will supply isosorbide, an eco-friendly bio-material, and provide technology to optimize dental materials, while Graphy will pursue the development and commercialization of high-performance dental resins using them.
The global medical market has recently seen growing demand for next-generation materials with eco-friendliness, safety, and biocompatibility. In particular, active research is under way on bio-materials with superior physical properties for medical devices attached inside the mouth, such as orthodontic appliances and prosthetics.
Isosorbide is an eco-friendly bio-material made by chemically processing starch extracted from plant resources such as corn. Isosorbide, which Samyang Innochem is the only domestic producer of, is used in plastics, coatings, and adhesives for electric vehicle motor cores, and has recently also been used in developing insulation materials for liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks.
Through this agreement, the two companies aim to develop bio-based dental materials free from concerns over endocrine disruptors, unlike existing petrochemical-based dental materials, and to secure a technological edge in the global digital dentistry market.
"We have joined forces to develop next-generation dental materials that surpass the limits of the existing market, combining Samyang Innochem's capability to supply eco-friendly high-performance materials with Graphy's unrivaled digital 3D printing technology," said Ryu Hoon, head of Samyang Innochem's Business PU. "This will serve as an opportunity for isosorbide to advance beyond the chemical materials market into the high-value-added medical device market."
Meanwhile, Samyang Innochem completed Korea's first and the world's second isosorbide production plant, spanning 7,000 pyeong within the Gunsan Free Trade Zone, in 2022. Its annual production capacity is 15,000 tons, and the company plans to continuously expand it through facility efficiency improvements and expansion investments.
