HANOI -- Vingroup on Saturday announced that the two sons of billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong will assume top leadership roles at two of the group's main businesses, signaling the start of a generational transition at one of Vietnam's biggest conglomerates.
Pham Nhat Quan Anh, Vuong's 33-year-old eldest son, will take over as chief executive officer of electric vehicle maker VinFast after becoming chairman in May.
Pham Nhat Minh Hoang, 26, will become CEO of electric taxi operator Green and Smart Mobility (GSM).
The appointments are notable because the 58-year-old father remains actively involved in the businesses he founded and continues to serve as chairman of Vingroup, while Nguyen Viet Quang remains the conglomerate's CEO.
The leadership reshuffle comes as Vingroup accelerates the "training and development of in-house talent and transition leadership responsibilities to a younger generation of leaders," the group said in a statement.
"I am committed to working closely with our talented team to uphold VinFast's core values and continue delivering world-class products and the highest standards of service to customers around the world," Quan Anh said in the statement.
A graduate of Singapore Management University, Quan Anh has worked in the family business since 2015, holding roles across various group companies, which span real estate, energy, transportation, education and technology.
Before becoming VinFast chairman, he was a director at the company, working across vehicle development, manufacturing, sales and after-sales services since 2019.
Before joining VinFast, he held senior roles at Vinpearl, Vingroup's hospitality arm, and is currently CEO of VinMetal, the group's metals unit. He will retain his role at VinMetal.
VinFast faces mounting pressure to deliver results from its aggressive global expansion after years of heavy investment.
The company was Vietnam's top-selling carmaker in 2025. Globally, VinFast delivered a record 196,919 EVs last year, more than double the previous year's figure. But overseas markets accounted for only about 11% of deliveries.
VinFast has yet to turn a profit. It posted a net loss of $3.9 billion last year and has accumulated about $9 billion in losses over the three years since its Nasdaq listing, as it has struggled to gain traction overseas while spending heavily on expansion.
The company has increasingly shifted its focus toward Asian markets, including India, Indonesia and the Philippines, after struggling to gain scale in the U.S. and other Western markets.
In India, VinFast recently suspended plans to locally manufacture several existing models and is instead developing new vehicles specifically for the Indian market, Reuters has reported.
Other changes are taking place. Earlier this month, VinFast announced plans to sell its two main factories and offload roughly $7 billion in debt to investors linked to Vingroup and Vuong as it moves toward an asset-light model.
VinFast says the restructuring will allow it to focus more on research and product development, in line with its latest expansion strategy.
Vuong, Vietnam's first billionaire, has a net worth of $37.9 billion according to Forbes, making him Southeast Asia's wealthiest person.
Meanwhile, Vinhomes, Vingroup's lucrative real estate arm, remains under professional management, led by Chairman Pham Thieu Hoa and CEO Nguyen Thu Hang, while Vuong retains majority ownership.
Vinhomes recorded after-tax profit of 52 trillion dong ($2 billion) in the first half of 2026, around 2.5 times that of its parent. The property developer is a major contributor to group earnings, helping to shoulder VinFast's losses.
As for Hoang, his appointment as CEO of GSM marks his first top executive role at a major Vingroup company.
A graduate of Aston University in the United Kingdom, the younger son has also worked across several group businesses. He has held senior leadership positions at VinFast, Green Future, VinSmart Future and GSM, among other companies, according to Vingroup.
In a related move, GSM's current CEO, Nguyen Quoc Tuan, will become chairman, replacing Vuong's wife, billionaire Pham Thu Huong.
GSM, the taxi and ride-hailing company, currently operates in seven countries -- Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, India, Kazakhstan and Denmark. It plans to expand into at least three additional markets this year and is also targeting an international stock market listing.
The 3-year-old company has become an important VinFast customer as the automaker expands overseas. GSM plans to purchase around 1 million VinFast EVs and 4 million electric scooters through 2030.
