S-Oil (010950) has launched a protection campaign for the golden mandarin fish, a designated natural monument in Korea.
S-Oil said on the 4th that it conducted a volunteer activity to release golden mandarin fish fry on the 1st in Hwacheon-eup, Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon Province, with about 100 participants including employees' families and a university student natural monument protection group.
The activity was co-hosted by the Korea Freshwater Fish Conservation Association and the Environmental Foundation to protect the endangered golden mandarin fish and raise interest in preserving freshwater ecosystems. After receiving safety training and explanations on the ecology of the golden mandarin fish and freshwater fish, participants personally released 5,000 fry, reflecting on the significance of biodiversity conservation.
Since signing a national heritage guardian agreement with the Korea Heritage Service in 2008 as the first domestic company to do so, S-Oil has continued its natural monument protection activities for 19 years. During this time, the company has carried out a protection campaign for the spotted barbel (eoreumchi) together with the Korea Freshwater Fish Conservation Association, returning a total of about 50,000 fish to nature through fry releases and achieving results in restoring the spotted barbel population in its natural habitat.
Since last year, the company has designated the golden mandarin fish—whose population has declined by about 50% over the past decade—as a new protected species and expanded its conservation activities.
"Based on the steady participation of our employees, we have been able to achieve the meaningful result of restoring the spotted barbel, a natural monument," an S-Oil official said. "We will continue to support activities for protecting endangered species and preserving biodiversity, and strive to be a company that fulfills its social responsibility."
