Gaon Cable and DL E&C have completed field validation of a jointly developed cable with an integrated conduit.
Gaon Cable, a subsidiary of LS Cable & System, said on Aug. 25 that it conducted a pilot installation of Aluminum Clad Flex (ACF) cable at a newly built apartment complex with DL E&C, validating its performance and ease of installation.
DL E&C will begin using ACF cable in new apartment complexes next year. The product uses an aluminum sheath around the power cable that also functions as a conduit. By combining conventional conduit installation and wire insertion into a single process, it can reduce construction costs by as much as 20% to 30% and shorten construction periods. Gaon Cable is the only company in Korea to have commercialized and supplied the product.
The companies signed a memorandum of understanding for joint research and development of ACF cable in 2023. They subsequently developed installation methods and dedicated accessories for use in apartment complexes. They also established a method for calculating required material volumes using DL E&C's building information modeling (BIM) designs.
Gaon Cable plans to expand the use of ACF cable beyond apartment complexes to logistics centers and industrial plants. At remodeling sites, the cable can be installed in confined spaces without removing existing conduits or installing new ones.
"We expect ACF cable to establish itself as a new power distribution solution as the construction industry's demand for shorter project schedules and lower costs increases," Gaon Cable CEO Jung Hyun said.
