Nasdaq rises more than 1% as chip stocks extend rebound from bear market territory
Investing.com -- Shares of Japanese consumer companies fell broadly on Wednesday as the yen hovered near its weakest level in almost four decades, with investors selling retailers and leisure stocks expected to bear the brunt of higher import costs and softer household spending.
Home furnishings retailer Nitori Holdings Co Ltd (TYO:9843) fell 3.8%, apparel giant Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. (TYO:9983) lost 3.2%, second-hand retailer Bookoff Group Holdings Ltd (TYO:9278) dropped 4.7% and entertainment operator Round One Corp (TYO:4680) tumbled 5.9%.
Supermarket and retail names also weakened, with Aeon Co., Ltd. (TYO:8267) down 1.8%, Life Corp (TYO:8194) falling 1.6%, Kobe Bussan Co Ltd (TYO:3038) shedding 1.4%, Ryohin Keikaku Ltd (TYO:7453), operator of Muji, slipping 1.7%, Pan Pacific International Holdings Corp (TYO:7532) declining 2.1% and Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd. (TYO:3382) easing 0.6%.
The declines came despite a broader rally in Japanese equities, with the Nikkei 225 advancing around 1% as exporters and technology shares tracked gains across global markets. The underperformance of consumer stocks highlighted investor concerns that a weaker yen could squeeze retailers' margins while eroding domestic purchasing power.
The Japanese currency weakened beyond 163 per U.S. dollar, hovering near levels last seen in 1986, as higher U.S. Treasury yields, elevated crude oil prices and persistent demand for the dollar outweighed support from Tokyo's latest long-term economic strategy.
A weaker yen raises the cost of imported merchandise, food and energy, increasing pressure on retailers that source products overseas while also lifting living costs for consumers. That combination can compress corporate margins and damp discretionary spending, making domestically focused consumer stocks particularly vulnerable during periods of currency weakness.
The move came even as investors assessed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's latest "Honebuto no Hoshin" economic blueprint, which aims to mobilize more than JPY370 trillion ($2.3 trillion) in public and private investment through fiscal 2040 to lift Japan's long-term growth potential. The plan also reaffirmed the Bank of Japan's policy independence, easing concerns that fiscal policy could delay further monetary tightening.
Broader market sentiment remained focused on developments in the Middle East, where elevated geopolitical tensions helped keep crude oil prices firm, supporting the dollar and adding to pressure on oil-importing economies such as Japan.
